…I consider myself as “COVID fatalist”…

Vitaly Yankovy

Some people can hate me but I consider myself as “COVID fatalist” and one of the people who thinks that the worth thing that can happen after the pandemic is that nothing would really change.

COVID pandemic is a chance to think about how we consume, how we work and if there is something in our mindset except speculative interest for wellfare (which can not be gained because of pandemic). And the main thing is to think about digitalization of everyday life. Actually my lifestyle hadn’t changed much but I started to think a lot how and for what I spent my days.

Transition footprint

In his work Vitaly Yankovy uses data obtained from a mobile application that captures the user’s routes by GPS coordinates. The digital trace from navigation in space is a sample of self-sufficient digital matter, which arises as a result of human activity and can be viewed through the optics of “dark theories” in modern philosophy. The programme captures the path travelled by the artist and visualizes the moment of transition from urban space to the forest. In the spatio-temporal dimension, this is a short but capacious interval during which the type of landscape changes. Vitaly gives agency to a digital footprint and sees in this inhuman form of presence something that causes anxiety and interest. As well as the forest, which is a space of living, unknown and elusive for human perception. Audial fragment of the work enhance the feeling of existential anxiety before the majestic.
