Anna Ogulewicz

As a result of the exacerbations related to the Pandemic, educational and artistic institutions were closed, and students were instructed to do practical diploma theses in the form of visualizations. Therefore, Anna Ogulewicz unexpectedly lived alone with her dog in a big house on the edge of the forest. However, she decided to use the conditions as the most favorable for the project. Combining her fascination with primitive art and traditional techniques of making ceramics, she built a wooden potter’s kick wheel, on which she made a series of vessels inspired by the shape of a female body and fired them using the Pit firing method in the ground using natural and chemical materials such as egg shells, nuts, fruit skins, bones, hair, cobalt oxide, iron, and copper sulfate.

The circumstances forced me to improvise while working on my thesis, which, however, resulted in excellent experiments in the field of ceramics and performance art.

The experience of total self-isolation, with almost no contact with the society, resulted in excellent work and motivation to work as well as work on own limitations. After 4 months of isolation, I defended my thesis with the highest degree.

VASA VASORUM VENUS

Series of ceramic objects fired in the ground by Pit Firing technique and video-performance separated on 9 parts, intended for simultaneous presentation on several screens.

The work of Vasa Vasorum Venus is a two-stage form of the thesis on the interpretation of a woman as a vessel.

It includes a theoretical part in which it covers research and a formula on the historical and symbolic image of a woman over the past centuries based on anthropology, art history and literature. It deals with the importance of women in a broad context, including Venus of Willendorf, Lolita Nabokov, the symbolic Femme Fatale and Freud’s psychoanalysis. The practical part includes a technological approach to ceramics in relation to traditional techniques and a video-performance film.

The author sums up the technological work with a video-performative film in which she captures the parareliism between the stage of creating ceramics and the individual stages of a woman’s life. She looks for similarities in meanings, symbolism and references between a woman and a vase. She interprets the woman as the source and giver of life, water, blood, milk, energy, strength, love, abundance and passion.

The subject fascinates the author of physis, the attributes of fertility, the abundance of shapes, the richness of form and body architecture, and sees it as a path of information. However, she does not separate her from the psyche, she sees the feminine as a state as an adventure, observes the duality of female nature, the difference between gentleness and madness.

The vease has been associated with the shape of a female figure for centuries. In terms of technology, individual elements of the vessel bear bodily names – neck, foot, belly etc. Also, the liquid is often described with terms characteristic of a woman or with with a meaning similar to her, water can be calm, turbulent, deep, flowing etc.

According to the author, clay is a sensual material related to touch, tenderness and awareness, while sculpting is combined with eroticism. It has been a witness of history, culture, aesthetics, rituals and worship for centuries.
