During the Pandemic, I understood the power of nature even more than before…
Sofiia Korotkevych
The Pandemic appeared to me to be the driving force for a new approach to materials and mixtures that I work with.
I began to think more about their internal structure, their chemical or biological DNA. I decided to give more space for the material to open, while being exposed to high temperatures, to water. Thus, I became more interested in the natural aspects of each of the materials.
In the same year, I discovered that land art is for me a medium where the natural space opens new creativity and expression horizons for philosophical comparisons with everyday phenomena and emotions.
During the Pandemic, I understood the power of nature even more than before, because viruses are a huge natural layer that has its own behavior, character and influence.

‘Archiblocks’. Sofiia Korotkevych. Glass, adhesive mixture, acrylic spray paint, bolts. 2020
Sculptural ensemble ‘Archiblocks’ consists of 8 objects that combine contrasting shapes and properties of glass and concrete. Carrying out applied manipulations with each of them (read – intervention in material’s nature) – processing by high temperatures, dilution with water, manual molding – turns their primary [archi] essences into a new combination, the only symbol of which is an ‘archiblock’. Interference in the nature of things creates a field for interpretations, the opportunity to connect the newly formed symbol / form / content with its existing understanding and thus obtain a new perspective.
The ‘Inhale. Statics’ part of this diptych is about the emergence of pure, unencumbered ideas. The second part of this project – ‘Exhale. Statics’ tells us about the desire to act, despite internal caution. This project is not accidentally made in the land art format. In my opinion, a pure winter environment is where it is possible to symbolically depict the mental field where a person’s idea is born and dynamically develops.

It is no secret that the world has undergone huge changes over the past few decades, and the era of the Anthropocene is only gaining momentum. The constant digitization of life has become the new norm, and the question of what leads to mass globalization is increasingly appearing both in everyday conversations and in the international arena of all professional levels. In this installation, I depict the Earth as a fragile glass ball, and its interior – as a chip with a flashing blue diode that emerges and at the same time dominates the natural range of the planet. Today, the color blue is strongly associated with the technogenic world, and is the most popular for branding digital technology facilities. The soothing blinking of the diode is a symbolic reminder that the cyber world is always ON in all corners of the world and a new portion of encoded information flows into it every second. Thus, the virtual environment of the planet expands more and more, and perhaps even right now, through this process, changes the planet’s DNA.
